Recent Rules and Decisions

IN RE J. MAURICE THOMAS (Baton Rouge), 2023-B-0136 (4/25/2023): The Court permanently disbarred the respondent for practicing law during a period of suspension, misleading his client about his status as a suspended attorney, and failing to cooperate with the ODC in its investigation. The factual allegations in the formal charges were deemed admitted pursuant to Louisiana Supreme Court Rule XIX, §11(E)(3).

IN RE KEELUS RENARDO MILES (Prairieville), 2023-B-0028 (4/25/2023): The Court suspended the respondent for three years for failing to maintain necessary client and financial records, misusing his client trust account, converting client funds, failing to timely remit funds to his clients and their third-party medical providers, and signing his clients’ names to the backs of settlement checks and releases without their authority and then notarizing the signatures. The factual allegations in the formal charges were deemed admitted pursuant to Louisiana Supreme Court Rule XIX, §11(E)(3).

Consent Discipline:

IN RE HENRY B. KING, JR. (Baton Rouge), 2023-B-0074 (4/25/2023): The Court suspended the respondent for one year and one day, with all but ninety days deferred, for mishandling his client trust account, resulting in the commingling and conversion of funds, and for failing to properly withdraw from a representation.

IN RE PRESTON G. SUTHERLAND (New Orleans), 2023-B-0316 (4/25/2023): The Court suspended the respondent for one year and one day, fully deferred, for mishandling his client trust account, resulting in the commingling and conversion of funds, and for allowing a non-attorney employee to write checks on the trust account.

IN RE TONYA FRANCELLE COURSON (West Monroe), 2023-B-0365 (4/25/2023): The Court publicly reprimanded the respondent for neglecting a legal matter and failing to promptly refund an unearned fee.

IN RE HEATHER CHAPIN McALLISTER (Houma), 2023-B-0208 (3/28/2023): The Court publicly reprimanded the respondent for failing to promptly refund an unearned fee.

IN RE VERNON WESLEY THOMAS (Baton Rouge), 2023-B-0038 (4/12/2023): The Court publicly reprimanded the respondent for mishandling his client trust account.

Reciprocal Discipline:

IN RE MARY HOLLY HAMMETT (Hattiesburg, MS), 2023-B-0222 (4/25/2023): The Court suspended the respondent for one year based upon the order of the Supreme Court of Mississippi.
